I was really pleased when Amphora Aromatics asked me to review one of their new aromatherapy blends, primarily because I have become slightly obsessed about finding a natural air freshener that works (see earlier post on natural air fresheners). The oil burner is by far my favourite, especially using this aromatherapy blend.
Those of you who have been to my house may be surprised to hear that I am a huge fan of scented candles and reed diffusers. The surprise factor is because the most over-powering scent by far in my home is our much loved but very stinky dog, Maisy.
Why Switch to Natural Beauty Products?
Have you ever stopped to think about what is in your everyday toiletry and beauty products and how they achieve all those wondrous things that we strive for? I have certainly tried more than my fair share of hair products to change my natural ‘dragged backwards through a hedge’ look.
My favoured approach to cleaning has always been to buy the most powerful mould and mildew spray I could find and use it as liberally as possible. This was primarily due to laziness on my part as I could just spray it and let it deal with any mould that dared to invade our old and damp Cornish home. I’ll admit that the spray sometimes made me cough due to the toxic fumes and bleached my clothes if I sprayed it too widely but until my husband’s diagnosis it never occurred to me to use a kinder cleaning product.
Taking the plunge
I think it is fair to say that I spent a fair few weeks procrastinating before I took the plunge and decided to make my own natural cleaning products. One of the reasons for this was that I couldn’t find a ‘how to’ book that worked for me. I was already sold on the idea that I wanted to use natural cleaning products so I just wanted the basics of what I needed to buy and how to do it.
One of the first hurdles I had was deciphering some of the ingredients and where to buy them. For this reason before I share some basic recipes with you I have provided an overview of the basic ingredients, what they are and where you can get your hands on them.
This was my first step into the world of detoxifying my toiletries so it seemed fitting for this to be one of my first blog posts. I thought that changing to a natural deodorant would be simple as I was initially going for a straight product swap rather than trying to make my own deodorant. However, as with most things in life that are reported to be easy, this step has been one of the most challenging for me personally.
Anyone who has watched reality TV shows knows that you don’t get anywhere unless you have a sob story. I have always been relatively lucky and have managed to avoid misfortune. I am married to someone I love, have two great kids, a fulfilling job and I live in Cornwall, a mile or so from my favourite beach. Life was pretty good until my husband started to feel unwell in September 2016. This led to a series of trips to the doctor, lots of tests and head scratching and finally to a diagnosis of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia on 29 December 2016, aged thirty-six.
